Holly Williams Speaks On Free Speech Backlash

Attorney Holly Williams recently spoke with Tara Thomas of ABC Big 2 News for YourBasin.com regarding the heated rhetoric surrounding a number of topics that’s become commonplace in our hyper-political environment. While the First Amendment protects our right to free speech, even when that speech is hurtful or offensive, there are important exceptions. Especially when it comes to the workplace.

“One of the primary limits [to free speech] that I’m not sure people always realize, is that the Constitution applies to our relationship to our government. So, there is technically no right to freedom of speech in a private workplace,” Williams said.

This means that, to an extent, employers can limit the topics their employees are allowed to discuss. And because Texas is an employment-at-will jurisdiction, that employment can be terminated for almost any reason.
